What it does

What your agent can do with GitHub

You already know GitHub has its own API, and that it’s free. So the honest pitch for this server is narrower than “get GitHub data”: it is for the agent that already talks to ScraperSocial for other sources and wants repositories in the same shape, through the same connection, without a personal access token sitting in a config file.

Point Claude or Cursor at https://mcp.scrapersocial.com/github and it gets four tools. get_profile returns a user or organisation record for 1 credit. get_trending returns recently created repositories ranked by stars and narrowed by a term you pass, 1 credit per repo. list_endpoints is free and shows the other nine paths, and call_endpoint runs any of them: /v1/github/repo for one repository; /v1/github/repo-commits, /v1/github/repo-issues, /v1/github/repo-releases, /v1/github/repo-contributors and /v1/github/repo-languages for its parts; /v1/github/user-repos and /v1/github/org-repos for an account’s list; and /v1/github/repo-search for keyword discovery.

Handles are plain: an owner name for profiles, owner/repo for everything repository-shaped. Every GitHub endpoint costs 1 credit per call or per item, which makes this the cheapest platform on the service and a sensible place to test a new key. Public repositories only; nothing here reads a private repo or writes anything back.

Four jobs it finishes on its own

01

Dependency due diligence

Before adding a library, ask for its latest release, open issues and recent commits in one conversation. The agent calls /v1/github/repo, then /v1/github/repo-releases and /v1/github/repo-issues, and you read a summary instead of three browser tabs.

02

Drafting release notes

Pull the commits since the last tag and let the model group them by area. /v1/github/repo-commits is 1 credit per commit, so a fifty-commit window costs 50 credits and fits in a single call.

03

Maintainer and contributor research

/v1/github/repo-contributors lists who actually ships code; get_profile fills in each account's bio and public totals. Useful for hiring research, or for finding out whether a project depends on one person.

04

A weekly new-repos digest

get_trending returns repositories created in the past month with the most stars, filtered by your keyword. A digest covering one topic costs a handful of credits and can run from a scheduled prompt.

What this does not do

Written by a person, not generated. If something here is wrong, tell us.

Public repositories and public profiles only. There is no sign-in to GitHub on your behalf, so private repos, notifications and anything behind an organisation’s SSO stay out of reach, and nothing writes: no issues opened, no comments, no stars. Searching inside file contents isn’t offered; /v1/github/repo-search matches repositories by keyword, not code. The trending list is derived rather than GitHub’s own page: repositories created in the last 30 days, ranked by stars, narrowed by your term, so rankings turn over daily. A list call hands back 20 items unless you ask for more, and 50 is the ceiling per request; beyond that, feed meta.next_cursor into the following call. Every successful call costs at least 1 credit, even when a query matches nothing.

Questions

Before you connect

Why go through ScraperSocial when GitHub's API is free? #

If GitHub is your only source, don't; their API is free, richer and supports writes. This server earns its place when an agent already uses the hub for other platforms and you'd rather have one connection, one credit meter and one response envelope than a separate token and client just for GitHub.

What does a typical GitHub call cost? #

1 credit for a profile or repo record, and 1 credit per item on list endpoints such as commits or issues. A new account starts with 100 free credits; after that the $5 monthly plan carries 1,000.

How do I pass a repository? #

As a handle in owner/repo form, in the handle field of call_endpoint. Profile endpoints take the owner name alone. Case doesn't matter; the server lowercases it so cache entries merge.

Is get_trending the same as the trending page on github.com? #

No. GitHub doesn't publish a trending API, so get_trending ranks repositories created in the last 30 days by stars and filters them by your term. Expect the list to differ from the website.

Is this an official GitHub product? #

No. ScraperSocial runs independently of GitHub and Microsoft, has no affiliation with either, and reads public data only.
